Ginger Ale Taste-Off 2015

Ginger beer (or brew or ale) is my favorite drink. I'm not talking about that Canada Dry crap. I want something with a strong ginger flavor, good fizz and that awesome burning sensation you get in your throat after.

Ann gave me an awesome birthday gift of a dozen different bottle brands to sample, and I thought I'd share the fun.

Fentiman's Traditional Ginger Beer

A smooth ginger drink with a hint of pear that leaves a great burn.

The taste is really good, but I wish it had a little more fizz. That said, the bottle rarely left my hands until I'd drank it all.

Fizz: 2

Licensed by Fentimans from the UK and bottled for North America in Canada.

Red Rock Golden Ginger Ale

Billed as having "Just the Right Bite!™", this fizzy ginger drink has a touch of cream soda taste.

This is definitely more of a soda than an ale. It has a lot of fizz, and while it is flavored with pure cane sugar, but I frown slightly on the caramel coloring and not seeing the word "ginger" in the ingedients. Overall, it's good, just in a soda sort of way.

Burn: 4
Fizz: 4
Rank: 4

Produced under authority of Red Rock Licenses in Georgia.

Jamaica's Finest

Another more soda-like ginger drink, this one has a little less sweetness and more of a raw ginger flavor.

The tagline for this bottle says "HOT! HOT! HOT!", and while it doesn't seem to be made in Jamaica, it is pretty tasty.

AJ Stephans Ginger Beer

This "Jamaican Style" ginger beer has a solid kick to it.

It may be made in Boston, arguably far from Jamaica, but it has enough ginger burn to last. I even felt the burn in my nose... in a good way. There may be overtones of other flavors in there, but who can tell with all that awesome ginger taste.

Burn: 5
Fizz: 5
Rank: 1

Made by AJ Stephens Co in Fall River, MA.

Cock & Bull Ginger Beer

More of a soda, this ginger drink also has a hint of pineapple or apple Hard to tell, because ingredients list "natural flavors". If you're looking for more sweet than heat, this is your ginger soda.

Taste: 3
Burn: 3
Fizz: 4
Rank: 4

Bottled by Orca Beverage Inc. in Mulkiteo, WA.

Americana Honey Lime Ginger Ale

"Made in America" the side of the bottle proudly proclaims.

The ginger burn is there, but gentle and comes a few seconds after the lime flavor. This is a very drinkable soda, but not exactly what I look for in a ginger drink.

Taste: 3
Burn: 3
Fizz: 4
Rank: 5

Bottled by Orca Beverage Inc. in Mulkiteo, WA.

Blenheim Ginger Ale #5

A creation of "the earliest, smallest and many say finest, independent soda bottling company in the United States of America", this is more a soda formula, but it is tasty. There is a #3 variety ("Red Cap") which promises to be stronger in the ginger department, but this "Gold cap" will do in a pinch.

Taste: 3
Burn: 3
Fizz: 4
Rank: 3

Made by Blenheim Soda Co in South Carolina.

Fever Tree Premium Ginger Beer

The bottle says it's "brewed with natural gingers to enhance the enjoyment of great spirits", and it means it. I think.

This is a nice ginger beer style drink, and while the bottle is small (6.8OZ), the ginger taste is big. Fever Tree makes a mean ginger beer, and the three main ingredients are pure water, cane sugar and ginger roots. The fizz is nice, almost like champagne. Be sure and turn it upside down for a second before serving (to bring the extra ginger bits to the top).

Taste: 5
Burn: 4
Fizz: 5
Rank: 2 (maybe 1)

Made by Fever Tree in the UK and imported into the US.

Bundaberg Ginger Beer

The kangaroo on the label seems to be shouting "Brewed to be Better".

This Australian creation is nice and cloudy (that's the ginger, see?) with a nice balance between sweet and burn. For normal people. I wanted mre fire, but I wouldn't turn away a bottle of this fine drink. As long as someone else opens it for me. Do all bottles from down under have these super dangerous ring-pull "pop" tops?

Taste: 4
Burn: 4
Fizz: 4
Rank: 3
